gallery

 everyone is merely a collection
of moving art
beautifully painting and sculpting
a life of disappointments and heartbreak
she's busy trying to analyze
every last detail
the way her porcelain skin
melts under his tongue
fire fizzling doused with water
in the morning we can be anything we want
an epidemic of over achievers and under dreamers
will prove to be no match
but right now, I am simply
your personal private gallery

i can think of a few people who wish that this poem is about them, at first read at least.
we are all beautiful, we are all pieces of artwork, shaped by our parent's sex, societies hand and time.
the imagery is very sexual, skin melting to the touch of a tongue, the private gallery...
but it is also reminiscent of the mornings which you mention as well. if we think of the sun drying the dew off the plants. the wind spreading the pollen.
but there is a feeling of melancholy in your last two lines.
there seems to be regret about belonging to one person and not many.
humans are not meant to be monogamous, we are supposed to breed with as many people as we can to ensure our specific genes survive.
but due to our minds, our complex guilt and societal pressures we force ourselves to remain with a limit.
this is painful at times, because as art we should be shared, each brush stroke analyzed by critics and art lovers alike.
but then again if we were readily available for everyone that wants us, the beauty would be lost due to over exposure.
absence makes the heart grow fonder, and rarity makes shiny things more beautiful.
sorry if i rambled.

Baird: "but due to our minds, our complex guilt and societal pressures we force ourselves to remain with a limit."

This is what makes the human race special and unique. We have achieved the ability to be selective in who we decide to limit ourselves to. This is a major factor in what is the separation between Humans and Animals. We have complete free will and choice. Our cognitive ability to have restraint is an amazing feat of nature in itself. Animals breed with multiple mates because they do not know any better as far as species preservation.

I love this poem.

is not that we are unique, wolves i believe are monogamous as are some other members of the animal kingdom; my point was that its hard to keep that choice some times. i have never cheated on a significant other, but the temptation will always be there due to instinct.
its an amazing thing, we humans, who manage to suppress our desires and instincts.
